Book interview: "Another Cup of Coffee" Jenny Kane.

UK - Tapping away at the keys of her laptop with a steaming hot black coffee close at hand is how you will find author Jenny Kane most days.
Jenny from Tiverton has been a published author for ten years - although you may not have come across her books as Jenny has been hiding away under a pen name in the world of erotic literature.
Dubbed the 'Queen of Kink', Jenny has taken a step away from her "alter-ego" Kay Jaybee to focus on the work of Jenny Kane, which sits more comfortably on the coffee table and has been so well received online, it hits bookstores at the end of the month.
Another Cup of Coffee tells the story of a successful businesswoman who is forced to face her broken-hearted past when a mysterious mixtape lands on her doormat.
"I was very nervous as I wasn't sure if I could write mainstream fiction as well as stories of spanking and domination," said Jenny.
The author moved to Tiverton eight years ago with her husband and two children. Originally from Wiltshire, it was a school trip which began her love affair with coffee and a dilemma while studying archaeology at Leicester University which became the inspiration for her first novel as Jenny.
"I'm launching my book on September 29 on National Coffee Day," said Jenny. "I hate tea; I can't stand the smell of it. I went to Russia when I was 14. We were on an overnight steam train, it was freezing cold and the smell of tea onboard was making me nauseous.
"The only thing they could offer me was black coffee and I don't remember if I instantly liked it or I was just grateful but I have drunk black coffee every day since.
"'Another Cup of Coffee was inspired by a decision that I didn't make when I was a student. For 13 years the plot bubbled away at the back of my mind, but there was never time to actually write it down."
And this was perhaps due to being side tracked by the world of erotica - something which has been making Jenny extra "pocket money" while writing educational blogs for distance learning.
Jenny said: "10 years ago I became Kay Jaybee. It was one of those bizarre things; I was in a coffee shop in Scotland and the story idea just came to me and I was like 'woah'."
Feeling embarrassed, Jenny didn't tell anyone about her first piece of erotic fiction but now has a catalogue of around 100 publications with 17 solo books as Kay.
When asked about Fifty Shades of Grey by E L James, Jenny frowned.
"It was a difficult time for all of us," she said. "What E L James wrote was hot romance with some scenes in but the genre that Kay and so many of my peers write - it's got to be a proper story. If it had been, we would have been chuffed to bits. But suddenly the market was flooded with really poor, copycat work."
Jenny, 42, said while her family have been really supportive, her nan, who was also a writer, would not have approved of her work as alter-ego Kay.
"People label erotica writers; if I wrote about crime and murders nobody would think I was a criminal, but because I make people happy I'm labelled, which is sad.
"People have an image and it's not true because erotica writers are frighteningly dull and ordinary; we go to Tesco just like everybody else, but you are conceived to live a certain lifestyle which none of us do. But I was nervous about telling my mother-in-law!"
Jenny said that it had been gamble for publishers Accent Press to take her on as a mainstream author. She has two other books out, and is working on her next book Abi's House, due out next year.
On September 29 Jenny will be launching Another Cup of Coffee at Costa, Tiverton, signing books from 10.30am to 4pm.
